Maputo, 20 Sep (AIM) – Mozambique Airlines (LAM) was forced to cancel a flight from the northern city of Lichinga to Maputo because of a bird strike.
The plane was scheduled to stop in Nampula on its way to Maputo, but because of the bird strike, it diverted to the nearby airport at Nacala.
According to a LAM statement, “the flight was not scheduled to go to Nacala airport on its initial route, but this happened due to an incident. The aircraft hit birds, which led to its interruption and consequent return to the runway”.
According to the note, there were no injuries to passengers or crew as a result of the incident, “since the aircraft landed safely at Nacala airport.”
“A team of LAM technicians and specialists is currently travelling to Nacala to assess the condition of the aircraft. The passengers who were in Nacala, but bound for Maputo, will be transported by the flight that is taking the technicians to that airport, and those whose destination was Nampula are already being accommodated and will resume their journey today”, reads the note.
“Due to the unavailability of the aircraft, today’s TM 157 flight on the Nampula/Maputo route [usually a Boeing 737] has been rescheduled for Friday”, reads the LAM statement.
Even so, the situation has generated indignation on the part of the passengers, because until the early hours of Friday morning, there had still been no official communication from LAM about the reasons for the flight’s delay, nor about the conditions for accommodation and food.
