Maputo, 23 Sep (AIM) – Mozambican president Filipe Nyusi believes that multilateral cooperation is crucial so that the world may overcome the many challenges that have been plaguing humanity.
According to Nyusi, who was speaking on Sunday, in New York, at the “Summit of the Future”, multilateralism is not just an option, but an imperative necessity to face the complex challenges, especially on the African continent, in the area of international peace and security.
“If we want global prosperity for humanity, Africa, with its young and hard-working population, is crucial. It would be a total failure if it were left behind, or excluded, in the most important decision-making circles”, he said, during an “Interactive Dialogue” at the summit, under the slogan “Strengthening Multilateralism for International Peace and Security.”
The Summit of the Future is an event organized under the auspices of the United Nations General Assembly with the motto “Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow.”
As examples, Nyusi pointed to terrorism, endemic diseases and climate change as complex challenges where solutions require strong multilateral cooperation.
Nyusi pointed to the Covid-19 pandemic as a clear example that countries need to cooperate with each other. He believes that it showed how important international cooperation is in tackling global crises.
The Mozambican leader called for “far-reaching reforms in the multilateral system, especially with regard to the representation of developing countries in strategic decision-making positions, such as the United Nations Security Council”.
“We reiterate our firm support for a new international financial architecture that responds to the challenges of poverty and development”, he added.
The President explained that multilateralism is a collective decision that cannot be continually postponed and “there is an urgent need to restore the confidence of our peoples in international institutions and international law.”
Nyusi began a four-day working visit to the USA last Friday, in response to an invitation from the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres.
