
Maputo, 7 Jan (AIM) – Mozambique’s National Institute of the Sea (INAMAR) on Monday announced that seven people lost their lives as a result of drowning between 20 December and 5 January.
According to INAMAR spokesperson Lionid Chimarizene, speaking to reporters on the contingency plan for the 2024/2025 festive season, monitoring was carried out in 71 beaches across the country.
“From the monitoring carried out, seven cases of drowning were recorded, compared to eight in the same period last year”, he said. “During this period, we also reported two missing persons, compared to one last year, as well as one shipwreck”.
He also explained that, during the same period, 20 cases of animal attack and one case of fuel spillage were reported.
In the period in question, he said, INAMAR carried out maritime and land inspections, as well as signposting beaches and giving awareness-raising talks to bathers and maritime transport operators on crossings and controlling the transport of people and goods, he said.
