Maputo, 13 Jan (AIM) – Mozambique’s outgoing Prime Minister, Adriano Maleiane, announced on Monday that the government will not pay the traditional New Year bonus this year to staff of the public administration.
Interviewed by the Miramar television station, Maleiane said the government does not have enough money to pay the bonus. The bonus takes the form of an extra month of the basic wage, and so it is known as “the 13th month”.
Maleiane said the money available is only enough to pay the December wage bill, and to solve “some specific questions, particularly with regard to education”.
He added that the government is now working to ensure that the State will have enough money to pay workers of the public administration their January wages.
He insisted that the government wanted to pay its employees the New Year bonus “but the current conjuncture does not allow it”.
