Maputo, 15 Jan (AIM) – The European Union (EU) has expressed its willingness to support Mozambique in overcoming the post-election crisis, characterized by strikes, mass demonstrations, violence and looting since 21 October.
According to a statement, the EU and the member states could support the country in resolving the current political crisis.
The statement was issued on Wednesday after a meeting between the EU ambassador, Antonino Maggiore, and the leaders of opposition parties, namely: Albano Forquilha of Podemos, which is now the largest opposition party in parliament, Lutero Simango, of the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM), Ossufo Momade (Renamo), and Salomão Muchanga of ND (New Democracy).
However, Venâncio Mondlane, the former presidential candidate backed by Podemos, who has been responsible for calling mass demonstrations across the country in order to demand “electoral justice”, was not at the meeting.
“The leaders of these three parties presented the environment of the political dialogue underway with a view to overcoming the current situation in Mozambique and exchanged views on how the European Union and the member states could support this process”, reads the note.
According to the NGO “Decide” Electoral Platform, since the demonstrations began, over 300 people have been shot dead by police.
