Maputo, 16 Jan (AIM) – The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has called on the Mozambican authorities to hold accountable those who are responsible for using violence and disproportionate force against protesters during the mass demonstrations called by former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane in order to demand “electoral justice” and reject the fraudulent results of the elections held on 9 October.
In a statement, the OHCHR claims that the perpetrators of violations and abuses related to the elections in Mozambique must be held accountable.
“The Mozambican authorities must ensure that all human rights violations and abuses are effectively and independently investigated and that those responsible are brought to justice. Human rights are fundamental to creating sustainable solutions, combating injustice and addressing the root causes of conflict, and are therefore the basis for sustainable development, peace and security”, reads the statement.
The organization also demands state responsibility for the victims of police violence, saying that “the victims must also benefit from reparations and effective remedies.”
“It is crucial that freedom of peaceful assembly is respected and facilitated and that security forces refrain from resorting to unnecessary or disproportionate use of force. All parties concerned must take steps to reduce tensions and resolve any electoral disputes peacefully”, the document says.
The OHCHR has also expressed its willingness to support the country in order to promote respect and protection of human rights by also ensuring accountability for election-related violations and abuses.
Since the mass demonstrations began on 21 October, according to the NGO “Decide” Electoral Platform, at least 303 people have been shot dead by police while 619 others were injured by gunshots.
