Maputo, 5 Feb (AIM) – A group of Islamist terrorists on Monday burned down houses and looted various food products in Mirate Administrative Post, in Montepuez district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado.
According to local sources, cited in Wednesday’s issue of the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique”, the terrorists invaded Nicocue village, which is located around 45 kilometres from the Montepuez district capital.
This action took place after several months without any attacks being recorded in Montepuez. No fatalities were reported in this raid.
As a result of the attack, many families decided to leave the village and take refuge in the headquarters of the Administrative Post, while others headed towards Montepuez town. This situation forced the interruption of vehicles along the Montepuez-Mueda road. Traffic only resumed on Tuesday morning, after local forces were deployed.
“Traffic is already flowing. After the attack, the terrorists withdrew from the area. There are also reports that a car was set on fire, but what is certain is that the population has left the village”, a source said.
Also on Sunday, according to the paper, a group of terrorists attacked the community of Mitope, in the town of Oasse, in Mocímboa da Praia district.
“During the attack, a position of the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces (FDS) was hit, and some military equipment was lost. Our sources also report that both the military and the population abandoned the village”, said the paper.
