Maputo, 11 Feb (AIM) – The United Nations (UN) and various international financial institutions have expressed their willingness to support the Mozambican economy, despite the post-election crisis characterized by mass demonstrations that degenerated into violent riots.
The international financial institutions are the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the African Development Bank (ADB) and the World Bank.
These institutions expressed their commitment on Monday, in Maputo, at a courtesy meeting that they held with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maria Manuela Lucas.
According to a statement, the Minister received repeated assurances of support from these international financial institutions. “These institutions also pledged to continue providing financial support to the Mozambican government and to implement projects in the country in the sectors of agriculture, infrastructure, health, education and governance”, said the note.
The Minister also met with 26 heads of United Nations agencies, funds and programmes. During the meeting, the UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Mozambique, Catharine Sozi, said that the UN is willing to support the country on its sustainable development journey.
“The support is through the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework-Mozambique (UNSDCF 2022-2026), a document developed jointly by the Government and the twenty-five UN agencies, funds and programmes working in Mozambique, with a special focus on the populations most affected by the conflict in the north and natural disasters, as well as the most vulnerable women and children”, reads the statement.
