Maputo, 14 Feb (AIM) – The President of the Mozambican Supreme Court, Adelino Muchanga, has called for greater international cooperation in order to prevent and combat drug trafficking, which is related to islamist terrorism and other forms of organized crime.
Muchanga, who was speaking at an International Colloquium on Procedural Law, which took place on Thursday, in Maputo, said drug trafficking is particularly relevant in the context of terrorist financing “as a result of its implications for the sustainability of the conflict.”
“International and regional cooperation must be strengthened, as well as concluding agreements that establish expeditious mutual assistance mechanisms for the controlled surrender and extradition of criminals. It is a challenge for all law courts to fulfill their role, taking measures that contribute to general and special prevention, taking into account our geographical situation, socio-economic affinities and the global nature of the crime in question”, he said.
For his part, the Attorney-General, Américo Letela, believes that strengthening the judicial system may respond to terrorist threats and ensure that laws are applied effectively and fairly.
“The sophistication of the modus operandi of organized and transnational crime and its connection to money laundering, terrorism and its financing demands that our institutions be more prepared to investigate”, he said.
He added that it is essential to optimize processes and guarantee greater efficiency in the performance of the judicial system, by investing in digitalisation.
“The electronic processing of judicial proceedings not only contributes to procedural speed, but also facilitates access to information by all procedural actors. It makes it possible to hold virtual hearings and create integrated databases between different judicial and security bodies, with the aim of facilitating the exchange of relevant information in the fight against organized and transnational crime,”, he said.
