Maputo, 27 Mar (AIM) – The Office for the Fight Against Corruption in the central Mozambican province of Zambézia has opened criminal proceedings against 17 individuals, including eight teachers, for allegedly being involved in fraud and corruption schemes.
According to a statement from the anti-corruption office, the individuals in question amassed about one million meticais (15,600 dollars at the current exchange rate) by charging for vacancies at the Nicoadala Teacher Training Institute (IFP) over the last year.
“The events were triggered in April 2024, when a team carrying out inspections at the Nicoadala IFP found that there were 19 students in various classes attending lessons without their names appearing on the lists of candidates who had passed the animation exams. The defendants charged amounts ranging from 10,000 to 100,000 meticais per vacancy”, reads the note.
Of the 17 defendants charged, four teachers are awaiting trial in pre-trial detention at the Zambezia Penitentiary, while others are free but with the obligation to report their movements to the authorities.
“The provincial anti-corruption office calls on citizens and public servants in particular to refrain from committing these acts, as they represent an attack on the dictates of the education system and an affront to professional ethics, which are guiding principles for the rule of law and for a quality education”, reads the document.
