Maputo, 28 Mar (AIM) – The Mozambican Ministry of Education intends to revise the criteria for admission to higher education to ensure that the candidates admitted have the minimum skills to attend the courses they chose.
The measure comes after Lúrio University, which is based in the northern province of Nampula, admitted some candidates to the courses of Health Administration and Management and Nursing with less than 10 marks (out of a maximum of 20).
“We are talking about the highest grades, the minimum being, for example, 10. If you come in with a very low level, you can’t keep up and perfect or develop the skills that will enable you to operate professionally. So that’s our challenge”, said Education Minister Samira Tovela.
According to Tovela, who was speaking on Thursday, in Maputo, on the sidelines of a workshop on validating higher education qualifications, admitting candidates with grades of less than 10 “does not prioritize the quality we want graduates to have after their training and meet the demands of the job market.”
“The aim now is to align, review and quickly be able to move forward with some solidity. The harmonization of qualifications in the country’s higher education institutions will guarantee the mobility of teachers and students to any corner of the world, because the qualifications to be approved are in line with those of the region, the continent and the world”, she said.
“We need to guarantee mobility so that any teacher from here can operate anywhere. They can go out and actually work anywhere”, she added.
For her part, Maria Chicote, chairperson of the National Centre for Quality Assessment in Higher Education (CNAQ), said that the new measures to be approved will allow for harmonization of the curricula of the different higher education institutions in the country, focusing on results.
“We agreed with the universities on a percentage of 70 percent of a common base, which will make it possible to compare the skills of these new graduates. We also designed these qualifications in harmony with the socio-professional associations, the engineering association and the other associations, because it’s the associations that are active in the labour market that tell us what the skills are”, she explained.
