Maputo, 17 Apr (AIM) – The section of Mozambique’s main north-south highway (EN1) at Anchilo, between the northern provinces of Nampula and Cabo Delgado, has been reopened after it was destroyed by cyclone Jude in March.
In a statement, the National Roads Administration (ANE) explains that the reopening of this section of EN1follows completion of work on a temporary bypass near the bridge over the Monapo River.
“The reopening of traffic on the country’s main road will allow all kinds of journeys to be made safely in that region of the country, as well as the transport of people and goods and the flow of basic necessities to the two provinces”, reads the ANE note.
According to the document, work is underway on the final configuration of the bridge over the River Monapo, which is being carried out by a Chinese contractor.
No details are available as to when the final work will be completed. For this reason, traffic on the temporary diversion will be in only one direction at a time. Motorists are asked to respect the traffic rules to avoid congestion and road accidents.
“To ensure the safety of road users, traffic on this diversion will run from 05.00 until 22.30. This is for better traffic management and fluidity. The diversion is duly signposted and has permanent traffic advisors to ensure the safety and comfort of users”, says the ANE note.
