Porto da Beira
Maputo, 5 May (AIM) – The volume of containerized cargo entering the central Mozambican port of Beira may grow by 34 per cent with the expected arrival of around 600 cargo ships by the end of this year.
According to Lino Nhacumba, director of Maritime Services at the publicly-owned Ports and Rail Company (CFM), in the central region of the country, among the vessels that could dock at the port are PANAMAX ships, considered to be the largest container ships in the world, with a length of over 300 metres.
He explained that the Port of Beira currently offers the best safety conditions for docking ships with a draught of more than 12 metres.
“Due to the nature of the port, which is river-based, the conditions are in place for us to assist these ships, as we have modern means to guarantee their assistance in our harbour. As an example, in November 2024, we received a 300 metre long container ship, which we docked and undocked safely”, he said.
The port of Beira is located between the estuaries of the Pungué and Búzi rivers and covers an area of around twenty-eight square kilometres.
