: Médicos marcham pela saúde e direitos humanos em Maputo
Maputo, 26 May (AIM) – Resident doctors at Maputo Central Hospital (HCM), the largest health unit in Mozambique, have threatened to stop working overtime from June 1, as a result of lack of payment for over 13 months.
According to a letter sent to the HCM Director General, the doctors are also threatening to stop working outside of normal hours (after 15.30), as well as on public holidays and weekends, until the debts are settled.
The doctors say that after numerous meetings, “the government still owes debts for 2024, for overtime worked from January to April, as well as August and December and the whole of 2025.”
“The situation has caused a great deal of physical, emotional and financial strain, due to the cost of traveling to carry out these activities, directly affecting the quality of life of the resident doctors and their dependents”, reads the letter.
“The HCM’s attitudes constitute a real step backwards in relation to what was agreed in previous meetings, in which the resident doctors were asked to give a vote of confidence to the institution in order to resolve the problems concerning the payment for overtime”, the document added.
