Maputo, 16 Jun (AIM) – At least 18 Islamist terrorists were killed, over the past week, in clashes with the local militia (usually referred to as “local forces”) in Muidumbe district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado.
According to the Muidumbe district administrator, João Bosco, cited in Monday’s issue of the independent daily “O País”, during the clashes ten people, including eight women and two children, were kidnapped by the terrorists. However, they were later released after paying a ransom.
“In the attack that took place on June 7, in the village of Magaia, the terrorists had a setback in their incursions, because they received a very strong response from the Local Force that culminated in the killing of 18 members of this group”, Bosco said.
“The district is now calm and peaceful”, he claimed. But he added that the terrorists are continuing to cause panic elsewhere in Cabo Delgado.
“The terrorists have intimidated the population in the villages in their actions. The local authorities are discouraging young people from joining the ranks of the terrorists”, Bosco said.
