Maputo, 18 Aug (AIM) – The Mozambican Police (PRM) have caught red-handed a 48-year-old Nigerian national in possession of 89.8 kilos of methamphetamine, in a luxurious Maputo residence.
According to the PRM Maputo city spokesperson, Daniel Macuácua, cited in Monday’s issue of the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique”, the substance seized is methamphetamine, “although laboratory confirmation is still pending, which may be released in the coming days.”
The Nigerian was caught during Operacao Charuto (Cigar Operation), which is aimed at dismantling drug supply chains in Mozambique.
The suspect, who was caught last week, is still awaiting his first appearance before a magistrate to legalize his arrest, although the interrogation should have taken place within 48 hours of the arrest.
Macuácua also revealed that the suspect has a criminal record and he was returning from South Africa, where he supposedly obtained the illicit drugs.
At the time of his arrest, he claimed that the drugs belonged to a friend and that he was only helping him package the product.
“The authorities are continuing to take steps to locate possible accomplices”, Macuacua said.
