Maputo, 29 Sep (AIM) – A group of Islamist terrorists killed at least seven people following jihadist attacks against the districts of Montepuez and Balama, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado.
The attack, which took place over the weekend, victimized residents of the administrative posts of Mirate and Mavala.
According to local sources, cited in Monday’s issue of the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique”, all the victims were men. Some of them were beheaded and others were shot dead while trying to flee the terrorists.
“It all happened on the Messalo River. Balama lost four people, two of whom were murdered within Balama territory and two in the Montepuez area”, said a source from the Balama district capital.
According to the reports, the other three victims were from Mavala Administrative Post. They were killed after the terrorists “attacked the villages of Messalo, Monapo, Nseue A, and Savamoto. The victims were buried in Balama.”
Following the attacks, a significant contingent of the Mozambican Defense and Security Forces (FDS) was deployed to Mavala.
On the other hand, the humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has announced the temporary suspension of all its medical activities in the district of Mocímboa da Praia, “ due to the worsening of armed violence in the region.”
“The decision was made following a series of attacks this month that endangered the safety of civilians, health professionals, and medical infrastructure. The growing insecurity is drastically limiting the population’s access to essential health care. Hundreds of thousands of people urgently need medical and humanitarian assistance in Cabo Delgado, but insecurity continues to prevent them from receiving it”, reads a statement.
According to the document, the suspended activities include services in the Rural Hospital’s emergency room and maternity ward, emergency care, mental health support, and community outreach activities carried out by health workers in remote areas.
“Some patients requiring specialized care have been transferred to health facilities in Pemba and Mueda”, the note says.
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the total number of people displaced in recent attacks by terrorist groups in Cabo Delgado has risen to 5,770 in the districts of Muidumbe, Mocímboa da Praia and Montepuez.
