Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB)
Maputo, 20 May (AIM) – Hidroelectrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB), the company that operates the Cahora Bassa dam on the Zambezi river, in the central Mozambican province of Tete, has announced that it will pay 297 million meticais (4.6 million US dollars at the current exchange rate) to various shareholders in dividends from the 2025 financial year.
HCB is a private-law public limited company, 85 percent owned by the state-owned Companhia Elétrica do Zambeze and 7.5 percent by Portuguese company Redes Energéticas Nacionais REN. The company holds 3.5 percent of its own shares, while the remaining 4 percent are held by Mozambican citizens, companies and institutions.
According to statement, the distribution of dividends to Series B shareholders (consisting of Mozambican citizens, companies and institutions) will take place next Thursday (21 May). It results from the resolution on the allocation of the net profit for the 2025 financial year, totalling 7.1 billion meticais, approved at the company’s ordinary general meeting on 30 April.
“Of this amount, 61.2 percent was allocated to dividend distribution to shareholders, while the remaining 38.8 percent was retained to finance strategic investment initiatives, including projects for rehabilitation, modernization and expansion of electricity generation capacity. For Series B shareholders, a gross dividend of 0.27 meticais per share was approved, corresponding to the entire net result per share for the financial year”, reads the statement.
For Series A shareholders, namely the Mozambican state and REN, a dividend of 0.16 meticais per share was set.
The Cahora Bassa reservoir is the fourth largest in Africa, with a maximum length of 270 kilometres and a width of 30 kilometres between banks, covering 2,700 square kilometres and an average depth of 26 metres.
With nearly 800 employees, HCB is one of the largest electricity producers in the Southern African region, supplying neighboring countries. According to previous figures, HCB collected, in 2025, 344 million dollars in revenues and recorded a net profit of 112 million dollars.
