Maputo, 7 Jun (AIM) – Mozambican President Daniel Chapo has inaugurated a slaughterhouse and sausage production factory in Macate district, central province of Manica.
The infrastructure, which is named Planalto Fresh Produce Agro-industrial Complex, was budgeted at 200 million meticais (3.1 million US dollars at the current exchange rate) and has the capacity to slaughter 100 animals per day and produce eight tons of sausages.
The factory is located in an area of one hectare and currently employs 31 people, 11 of whom are women. Production is geared towards the national market with the aim of reducing the import of pork and its derivatives.
During his three-day working visit to Manica, the President also called on the population to concentrate efforts on increasing agricultural production as a way to reduce external dependence and minimize the impacts of the current global economic crisis.
“We are seeing, for example, the fuel crisis which, consequently, has increased the price of basic necessities. The best way to alleviate the impacts of this crisis is to work the land and produce food to escape economic dependence”, the President said.
“No country develops while its people are hungry. It is necessary for every Mozambican, wherever they are, to work the land to guarantee basic food products”, he added.
He explained that the country has extensive arable areas that can be used for the production of essential crops, such as tomatoes, onions, cabbage, and other foods for daily consumption.
“If we produce these foods, we can reduce the costs of the products that reach our table. There are goods that we don’t need to import because they can be produced in our backyards, neighborhoods, and communities”, he said.
