Maputo, 8 Jun (AIM) – The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) has expressed its willingness to boost bilateral cooperation with Mozambique in strategic sectors such as energy, mining, inclusive economic growth, human rights, and gender equality.
According to Camila Bruzelius, SIDA Director-General, speaking to reporters after meeting Mozambican Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maria Lucas, within the framework of bilateral political consultations between the two countries, Sweden is determined to continue investing in Mozambique, particularly in the energy and mining sectors, considered fundamental to boosting national economic growth.
“In a global context marked by uncertainties, Sweden will remain committed to strengthening its cooperation with Mozambique and to jointly addressing current challenges. The areas of cooperation between the two countries focus primarily on promoting peace, developing human resources, and inclusive economic growth. Sweden is a reliable partner of Mozambique”, she said.
Bruzelius also highlighted that Mozambique and Sweden maintain a historic partnership of more than five decades, based on mutual respect and a shared commitment to improving the living conditions of the populations.
“These consultations are part of the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2025 in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, on the sidelines of the meeting of Foreign Ministers of African and Nordic countries”, she said.
However, last December, the Swedish embassy in Maputo announced that the Stockholm government has decided to end bilateral development cooperation with five countries, including Mozambique, by 31 August 2026.
The other four countries are Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Liberia and Bolivia. Swedish aid had already been cut to several west African countries, such as Mali and Burkina Faso.
The embassy claimed that the decision is not related to any event in Mozambique “but is motivated by new and significant challenges in matters of security policy in the countries bordering Sweden”.
