Maputo, 10 Jun (AIM) – Mozambican President Daniel Chapo believes that peace and security are crucial factors in attracting new investments capable of boosting the national economy.
Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on Monday said peace and security are non-negotiable prerequisites to attract investment and drive economic growth.
According to Chapo, who was speaking at the World Bank’s Fragility Forum 2026 in Washington, Mozambique faces various challenges, from climate change and terrorism, which means that “new investments can create opportunities and drive development.”
The President also said that frequent floods, heavy rains, and terrorism in the northern province of Cabo Delgado are factors that increase vulnerability and require long-term intervention.
Chapo also said that the energy sector and investments in liquefied natural gas and the potential of hydropower are key growth engines. However, he called for a more diversified economy focused on agriculture, tourism, industry, infrastructures and logistics to generate employment for youth.
“Peace and security are prerequisites for development. The government is promoting an inclusive national dialogue to reinforce stability and accelerate economic and political reforms”, he said.
Chapo highlighted ongoing measures including the Local Content Law and efforts to strengthen public-private partnerships.
“Cooperation between public and private investment is essential to turn challenges into development. The country cannot develop without stability and preventive investment costs less than post-conflict reconstruction. It is better to invest before conflicts erupt than after”, he said.
Chapo’s participation reinforced Mozambique’s presence in international discussions on development and fragile states. Chapo was the only head of state invited to the high-level panel.
Mozambique was presented at the event as one of the countries’ most exposed to climate shocks.
