Maputo, 16 Jul (AIM) – Mozambican President Daniel Chapo has advocated for a renewed commitment to youth, science, technology, and innovation as pillars for consolidating bilateral cooperation between Mozambique and Portugal.
According to Chapo, who was speaking on Wednesday, in Lisbon, at the “Presidents’ Dialogue”, with his Portuguese counterpart, António Seguro, the future of both nations depends on the ability to invest in new generations and in knowledge.
During the dialogue, held at the opening of the Euro-African Forum 2026, Chapo said that Mozambique and Portugal have historical ties, “but we must prepare for the future.”
“The future belongs to the youth. We have no other choice but to invest in youth, science, technology, and knowledge. Mozambique has taken an important step in this direction with the creation of the Ministry of Communications and Digital Transformation, designed to accelerate technological modernization and human capital development”, he said.
The President believes that economic growth will only be sustainable if linked to social development. “Education, scientific research, tourism, agriculture, blue economy, logistics, and industrialization are strategic sectors for diversifying the national economy beyond the extractive industry”, he said.
Chapo also expressed gratitude for the support provided by Portugal to populations affected by cyclones and floods in Mozambique and advocated for joint investments in resilient infrastructure and climate adaptation policies.
“The Inclusive National Dialogue has contributed to boosting investor confidence. We also express gratitude for the support provided by Portugal and the European Union in the fight against terrorism”, he said.
For his part, the Portuguese President noted that Portuguese universities and research centers are well-positioned to deepen cooperation with Mozambique, advocating for a partnership based not only on academic training but also on joint research, innovation, and knowledge transfer.
Seguro reiterated that Portugal will continue to support Mozambique while respecting its sovereignty.
