Maputo, 4 Aug (AIM) – Mozambique’s largest high education institution, the Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM), on Monday inaugurated its new data center, which is aimed at enhancing interoperability and connectivity across management and research systems.
According to Guilherme, speaking during the inauguration ceremony, this modernized facility will preserve UEM’s digital assets and meet the demands of an increasingly digital world.
“We have moved from a room adapted over the years to a facility designed from the ground up as a data center, featuring precision climate control, integrated environmental monitoring, enhanced security mechanisms, redundant systems, and expansion capabilities”, he said.
He explained that the system, which includes solar power as a primary energy source, is also a significant innovation, balancing technological modernization, strategic efficiency, and environmental responsibility, “thereby upholding our commitment to implementing the Sustainable Development Goals within our institution.”
The vice-chancellor revealed that the facility has a storage capacity approximately 14 times greater than that of the previous server room and was designed with modern climate control, security, and monitoring systems, as well as the potential for expansion.
According to Gulherme, alongside these technological developments, a process is underway at the university to review and approve guidelines for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Such guidelines are intended to guide the responsible, ethical, secure, and pedagogical teaching and learning process.
For his turn, the Minister of Communications and Digital Transformation, Américo Muchanga, said that infrastructure represents a significant step toward strengthening the resilience of digital services in the country, reducing the risk of outages through redundant power systems.
“The infrastructure will be powered by the electrical grid but can also operate using solar panels or a generator. This redundancy significantly reduces the likelihood of failures, which is crucial for ensuring the continuous, secure, and reliable operation of infrastructure capable of serving the entire country”, he said.
