Maputo, 19 Sep (AIM) – The World Bank will disburse a further 50 million dollars to fund the Maputo Urban Transformation Project (PTUM), bringing the total investment to 150 million dollars, with implementation extended until 2028.
The project is aimed at improving vulnerable neighborhoods, managing solid waste, and reducing flood risks.
According to the PTUM coordinator, Víctor Mabeia, who was speaking to reporters on Thursday, at a workshop on the future landfill to be built in Ka Tembe municipal district, the budget review stems from the identification of new needs throughout implementation.
“During the improvement, we identified new needs, which led to the extension of the deadline by more than two years, and the increased investment will allow us to consolidate all components, ensuring environmental and social sustainability”, he said.
The PTUM, which was launched in 2021, is structured into five components. The first includes the integrated redevelopment of approximately 20 informal neighborhoods, ensuring drinking water, basic sanitation, mobility, and improved infrastructure. The second encompasses the revitalization of downtown Maputo, with drainage works and socioeconomic inclusion. The third focuses on the construction of the KaTembe landfill, covering an area of 80 hectares, for environmentally safe solid waste management.
The last two components relate to the institutional capacity building of the Municipal Council and emergency response, already activated during the heavy rains of 2022-2023.
For his part, solid waste advisor Háfido Abacassamo, said that community participation is crucial, because “about 300 households will be covered”
“Before beginning construction of the landfill, the regulatory agency will issue an environmental license, ensuring that all environmental impact assessment procedures have been followed”, he said.
“It is essential that reporting be conducted with technical rigor to avoid rumours, which can cause negative social impacts and hinder project implementation”, he added.
