Maputo, 31 May (AIM) – A group of South African companies have expressed their interest in boosting investment in Mozambique’s strategic sectors and promoting economic opportunities between the two countries.
The interest was expressed by Lyndon Barends, Managing Director for Strategic Partnerships and Events at Arena Holdings, and Paulo dos Santos, CEO of Quintessentially South Africa, after an audience granted by Mozambican President Daniel Chapo.
The meeting was part of the preparations for Mozambique Investment Summit, which is scheduled for October or November in Maputo, aimed at boosting foreign investment and “positioning the country as a leading African destination for business.”
South Africa remains Mozambique’s main trading partner and one of the largest sources of foreign direct investment, with a strong presence in the financial, mining, energy, tourism, commercial and infrastructure sectors.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Lyndon Barends said that the President highlighted the country’s economic transformation, creating a favorable environment for international investment and strengthening economic relations with foreign partners.
“We had a very productive meeting with the President, who demonstrated a clear and ambitious vision for the country’s economic development, prioritizing strategic projects to drive economic transformation”, he said.
He added that the meeting reinforced the commitment of Arena Holdings – one of Africa’s largest English-language news publishers in print whose titles include the Sunday Times and Business Day – to support the staging of the summit and to promote internationally Mozambique’s economic potential.
“It was an extremely positive meeting and we feel great enthusiasm in supporting this initiative and helping ensure the summit is a success,” he said.
The Mozambique Investment Summit is expected to bring together business leaders, investors, financial institutions and executives from different parts of the world, providing direct access to opportunities in the country and the national economic environment.
“The summit will be held in Maputo so that investors can feel the country’s energy, understand the business environment and explore concrete investment opportunities,” Barends said.
“The President was very clear that attracting investment is a strategic priority to drive economic reconstruction, strengthen infrastructure, boost tourism, develop energy and accelerate growth in key sectors of the economy”, he added.
