Maputo, 9 Jun (AIM) – The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has proven to be a crucial pillar for child development in Mozambique and across priority sectors of the economy, particularly human capital development and public financial management, according to Finance Minister, Carla Louveira.
According to the minister, cited in a statement, after meeting UNICEF representative in Mozambique, Mary Louise Eagleton, the government is interested in continuing benefiting from UNICEF’s contribution to national development efforts, “particularly in the areas of child health and education, with a view to ensuring sustainable economic development.”
“The Minister of Finance thanked the United Nations for its unwavering humanitarian support to populations affected by floods in the provinces of Maputo, Gaza and Sofala, as well as the international emergency appeal launched by Ms Catherine Sozi, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Mozambique, to mobilize 187 million dollars to support 700,000 flood victims”, she said.
Also on Monday, the minister received representatives of Millennium BIM, one of the country’s largest commercial banks, which recently announced to have recorded, over the last year, a sharp fall in its profits, evaluated at 201 million meticais (3.1 million US dollars at the current exchange rate).
She expressed satisfaction with Millennium BIM’s contribution to national economic growth, highlighting the operationalization of the Sovereign Wealth Fund, “the recruitment of consultants to support the debt strategy, and the agreement with the World Bank to finance structural projects.”
