Nacala, 27 Jul (AIM) – Mozambican President Daniel Chapo, speaking in his capacity as President of the ruling Frelimo Party, claims that he is unaware of the reasons behind the resignation of Margarida Mapandzene as Governor of the southern province of Gaza.
Mapandzene ran for the office of Governor of Gaza in the general and provincial assembly elections held on October 9, 2024, as the lead candidate for the ruling Frelimo party. Las Friday, she presented a letter of resignation from the post of governor, alleging personal reasons.
However, some voices believe that she decided to step down as a result of cases of misappropriation of donations intended for the victims of the floods that hit Gaza province earlier this year.
According to Chapo, speaking to reporters while reviewing his working visit to the northern province of Nampula, the only person in a position to clarify the motives behind the decision is the former governor herself.
“The most practical approach is to put the question regarding the reasons for the resignation to the person who resigned. Only she can provide the answer”, The President said.
Regarding the removal of the Frelimo First Secretary for Gaza, Chapo reiterated that the party would adhere to its internal guidelines when selecting a successor for the role.
For his part, Frelimo spokesperson Pedro Guiliche, speaking on the sidelines of a visit to Manica,
Mapandzene’s resignation was consistent with Mozambican law, “and the party remains committed to implementing its governance program and election manifesto.”
“The governor’s decision fell within legally established mechanisms and that any suspicions of wrongdoing should be investigated by the competent authorities. It will now be the Provincial Assembly’s responsibility to step in and fulfill its role”, he said.
