Maputo, 14 Jul (AIM) – Mozambique’s ruling Frelimo Party will elect its mayoral candidates for the October municipal elections over the coming weekend, according to the Party’s spokesperson, Ludmila Maguni.
She told a Thursday press conference in Maputo that the short lists contain about 200 candidates for mayor in the 65 municipalities. She promised that the successful candidates will be announced by Monday.
The inner-party elections will take place in the Frelimo zone committees in the municipalities.
“This is a process that involves about 10,000 Frelimo members in all the committees”, Maguni said, “as well as the more than four million members of the party, and all the Mozambican population”.
She did not say how the “more than four million members” claimed by Frelimo would take part in the elections, much less “all the Mozambican population”.
“Municipal elections are an important landmark in the development of our country”, she added, “since they allow the local communities to participate in taking decisions that affect their lives”.
Maguni claimed that everything is ready to guarantee a Frelimo victory in the 65 municipalities.
“Frelimo believes in the importance of internal democracy”, she said, “in which all members have the opportunity to choose their representatives, thus promoting transparency and conferring legitimacy on the internal election process”.
Maguni claimed that Frelimo has capable candidates who can run any of the municipalities which are currently in the hands of the opposition.
