Maputo, 28 Aug (AIM) – The Mozambican Police (PRM) has arrested a 52 year-old man for allegedly being in possession of a 12-gauge shotgun, 34 rounds of ammunition, two hunting guns and bayonets.
According to PRM spokesperson, Marta Pereira, the man was detained in the Maputo neighbourhood of Chamanculo neighbourhood, and he used to hire the firearms out to other criminals.
“The arrestee is member of a gang dedicated to hiring firearms”, she said. “The detention is result of an investigation carried out by the police, in which a second individual involved in the case was also detained”.
The arrestee, in his turn, claimed that he inherited his arsenal from his uncle five years ago. His uncle had supposedly used the guns for hunting.
“My uncle gave me the firearms before he died. I only showed them to my cousin”, said the suspect, who was not named. “The goal was to use the, to shoot ducks and rabbits”.
He acknowledge that his detention is fair since he does not have any legal documentation for the weapons.
