Maputo, 17 Jan (AIM) – A member of the Mozambican Police (PRM), in the central city of Beira, has allegedly killed one of his colleagues and seriously injured two minors while trying to protect robbers from being lynched by the population.
According to a report by the independent newssheet “Carta de Moçambique”, citing eye-witnesses from Macuti neighborhood, where the case took place, the police officer was drunk.
“We found two people who had been robbing homes and when the policeman arrived, instead of protecting the population, he started firing his gun. He shot a man in the head and injured two children, one of whom is my son”, said eye-witness Alcindo Mateus.
The injured children are aged 12 and 14, and they are now being treated in Beira Central Hospital.
The local residents also accuse the officer of failing to provide aid to the victims.
The Police spokesperson in Sofala province, Dércio Chacate, says that an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances of the incident.
“We are still working to ascertain the real motives behind the incident. A team has been set up and is investigating”, he said.
