Maputo, 19 Jan (AIM) – The trial began on Wednesday, in the southern Mozambican city of Inhambane, of five people accused of kidnapping.
According to a report in Friday’s issue of the independent daily “O Pais”, those on trial are also accused of first degree murder, transporting and trafficking in firearms, theft from a local petrol station, and obliging a minor to leave the home of his parents.
The man who allegedly led the kidnap gang, Jacinto Alfiado Vilanculos, with four accomplices, allegedly kidnapped three people in the Mapinhane administrative post, in Vilankulo district, in 2022 and 2023.
The accused were seized by members of the public on 7 January this year, when one of them, Manuel Mungue, was attempting to kidnap another victim.
The report gave very few details, either of the kidnappings, or of the murder.
