Maputo, 25 Jan (AIM) – A train, belonging to Mozambique’s publicly owned Ports and Rail Company (CFM), towing 80 wagons loaded with magnetite, derailed on Wednesday near the border with South Africa at Ressano Garcia.
According to a CFM statement, the train locomotive had departed from South Africa and was bound for the port of Maputo.
“The train accident caused a stoppage of traffic on the Ressano Garcia line, near kilometer 72+800, and passenger trains are currently stopped between Movene and Ressano Garcia”, reads the CFM note, adding that the company has set up a commission of enquiry to investigate the causes of the accident.
As a result of derailments, related to less freight traffic than expected. among other factors, CFM, in 2022, recorded a drop in its profits of about a billion meticais (15.7 million dollars).
