Maputo, 8 Mar (AIM) – Mozambique’s Northern Regional Water Board (AdRN) has denied rumors that went viral on social media claiming that the sources of drinking water for the city of Pemba, capital of the northern province of Cabo Delgado, had been poisoned by Islamist terrorists.
According to an AdRN statement, the messages shared on social media are false and the water supplied in Pemba continues to meet the standards recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Since Wednesday night, messages have been circulating on social media claiming that the water had been poisoned by terrorists, which has created a false alarm.
What might have caused great alarm is the fact that terrorists recently attacked the village of Pulo, near an area known as Ponto A, which is eight kilometres from the Water Treatment Plant (WTP), which supplies water to the town of Metuge and the city of Pemba.
“AdRN hereby guarantees that the attack was not carried out on the catchment/water treatment plant. The quality of the water supplied to the population remains within the drinking water standards recommended by the World Health Organization”, reads the note.
The treatment plant, the note says, remains under the control of the Mozambican Defense and Security Forces.
The upsurge in terrorist attacks in some regions of Cabo Delgado in recent days has caused around 100,000 people to flee their homes in search of safer areas.
