Gurúè (Mozambique), 10 Mar (AIM) – Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Friday laid the first stone for the paving of the Lioma-Mutuali and Gurúè-Nampevo roads in the central province of Zambezia.
The project includes the regular maintenance of the Nampevo-Gúruè and Majaua-Milange-Molumbo-Mugomo roads, and will facilitate the circulation of people and goods between Zambezia and the neighbouring province of Nampula.
The work is financed by the Mozambican government in partnership with the European Union. It is part of a much larger project, known as “Promove Transporte” (Promote Transport) which consists of the rehabilitation and maintenance of rural roads on Zambezia.
The key parts of this project include paving 50 kilometres of National Highway N103 (from Lioma to Mutuali, in Nampula); improving and resealing 125 kilometres of the Nampevo-Gurue road (also part of N103), and the paving and regular maintenance of sections of highway R650 (Majaua-Milange-Molumbo-Mugomo).
At the ceremony, Nyusi thanked the European Union “which has accompanied us to develop the country in this type of undertaking, even at difficult moments”.
The Zambezia Provincial Governor, Pio Matos, expressed his commitment to ensure that the construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of roads takes place in an environment of tranquility and peace.
He stressed that improving the access roads in rural areas will allow the transport of goods such as macadamia nuts from Gurue to the outside world. Gurue is now the largest producer of macadamia nuts in Mozambique.
For his part, the EU ambassador to Mozambique, Antonio Maggiore, pledged that that the EU will continue to work with the country as part of its strategy to strengthen connectivity with its partners. He said that roads are a clear example of this commitment to strengthening connectivity.
“The partnership with Mozambique”, Maggiore stressed, “also covers priority areas such as security and the fight against terrorism in Cabo Delgado, as well as humanitarian aid”.
“The well-being of Mozambique is also the well-being of the European Union”, he declared.
