Maputo, 20 Mar (AIM) – The governor of the northern Mozambican Province of Cabo Delgado, Valige Tauabo, announced on Tuesday that the district of Quissanga and the island of Quirimba, in the neighboring district of Ibo are free from the terrorists who had occupied them earlier this month.
According to the governor, cited in Wednesday’s issue of the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique”, the terrorists were expelled thanks to the efforts and actions of the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces.
The Mozambican forces, he said, not only made it possible to get rid of the jihadists, but also supplied the local residents with various basic products, especially food.
The terrorists occupied Quirimba for at least seven days, where in addition to killing soldiers they stole food. The islamists occupied Quissanga for a fortnight, where they stole various goods and destroyed government facilities.
Tauabo called on the population to maintain vigilance and hope for the success of the fight against terrorism.
After several months of relative normality in the districts affected by armed violence in Cabo Delgado, the province has been experiencing new movements and attacks by jihadist groups for the past few weeks which have limited circulation and caused many villagers to flee their homes for safer areas.
