Maputo, 26 Mar (AIM) –Mozambique’s National Roads Administration (ANE) has banned heavy goods vehicles from using the R698 Road, which links the districts of Montepuez and Mueda, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
The ban is intended to allow emergency work being to be carried out on critical sections of the Muirite-Mueda river section of the road, if the weather conditions are favorable
According to a statement from ANE, heavy goods vehicles must not use this road from Tuesday (26 March) to 10 April.
“At the moment, efforts are being made to restore traffic on the N380: Macomia-Oasse road, which connects the districts in the northern part of Cabo Delgado province, where the rise in the level of the Messalo river has contributed to damaging the platform of the section of the road that crosses the lower reaches of this river”, reads the ANE statement.
The ANE also reports that due to the heavy rain that has been falling in Cabo Delgado province, causing severe damage to the province’s road network, traffic is restricted on some other roads.
“In this context, ANE calls on road users in general to plan their journeys and to transport passengers with extra care during the rainy season and in places with poor visibility, especially in flooded areas and when approaching drainage structures”, says the note.
The institution also recommends that vehicles weighing over 10 tonnes should not be driven on dirt roads in rainy weather.
