Barco de pesca naufragado meio submerso na Ponta d'Ouro
Maputo, 3 Apr (AIM) – At least one person died and two others are missing following a shipwreck that took place on Tuesday afternoon in the Ndango region, in Chemba district, in the central Mozambican province of Sofala, on one of the tributaries of the Zambezi River.
The causes of the shipwreck are not known yet. The dead man was found at the end of the day without part of his body. It is presumed that he had been devoured by crocodiles.
Of the two missing, one is a pregnant woman. They had not been found by 07.00 on Wednesday morning.
According to local sources, cited in the Wednesday’s issue of the independent daily “O País”, four other people survived the shipwreck.
The sources explained that the shipwreck took place when the victims (six women and one man) were travelling towards a voter registration post, where they intended to be registered for the presidential, parliamentary and provincial elections scheduled for 9 October.
The Chemba district authorities have confirmed the incident but have given no details because they say they do not have reliable information about what actually happened.
