Maputo, 5 Apr (AIM) – The families responsible for offering shelter to some victims of islamist terrorism in the neighborhoods of Napulubo, Changane and Nanga, in Macomia town, in the northern Mozambican Province of Cabo Delgado, claim they have been excluded from the food distribution carried out by humanitarian organizations and NGOs.
According to local sources, cited in Friday’ issue of the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique”, this situation forced a halt to the distribution of food aid in the Napulubo neighbourhood.
“Some young people threatened to cut the bags with blades if the distribution was not inclusive, which led to the process being interrupted”, a source said.
Another source, who is sheltering a relative who has fled from terrorism, said that the exclusion of host families is worrying because “life is difficult for everyone, but those in charge say that anyone who wants to receive food aid should go and live in the resettlement centre. That doesn’t make sense because the displaced lived in our houses first.”
According to another source, as a result of supposed individual interests of those involved in distributing food to the displaced people, neighbourhood structures are often ignored. The source cited cases in which the same products are sold to interested parties at low prices, harming the displaced people or host families.
