Maputo, 12 April (AIM) – Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) inaugurated on Thursday, in Maputo, a Digital Forensic Laboratory, which will provide greater dynamism in clarifying criminal cases in which the perpetrators use computers.
The facility, which is budgeted at 700,000 US dollars, was funded and built by the Chinese government.
The laboratory is especially prepared to deal with investigation of kidnappings that have been plaguing Mozambican cities since 2011. It is also prepared to investigate cases of drug trafficking, financial fraud and other related crimes.
According to the Sernic director-general, Nelson Rego, with the capacity installed in forensic computing, investigators will be able to analyze digital footprints in order to identify the perpetrators of the crime, establishing the extent of the damage that will determine the collection of evidence for criminal prosecution.
“We want to ensure that we make good use of this equipment in our activities, particularly in the investigation and clarification of crimes committed using electronic devices”, Rego said.
For his part, Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda praised China’s ambassador to Mozambique, Wang Hejun, for his dedication and personal commitment to implementing the project.
“The Forensic Laboratory that we have just received is part of a set of measures that the Mozambican government has been implementing as part of the institutional modernization of SERNIC, with a view to strengthening its capacity to respond to criminal cases that are committed with the use of modern technological means”, Ronda said.
The minister guaranteed that the laboratory will help improve the mechanisms for producing evidence during the investigation of criminal cases.
The Chinese ambassador said that the new laboratory includes equipment for crime scene investigation, data and means of laboratory analysis.
“This equipment will help build the capacity of the Mozambican Police (PRM), creating the conditions to safeguard public security in the country. China is willing to co-operate by observing the principle of sincerity, effectiveness, friendship and good faith with African countries”, he said.
