Maputo, 3 May – At least 2.2 million Mozambicans have benefited from renewable energy up to the first quarter of the current year, under the Brilho Programme, aimed at promoting sustainability and universal access to clean energy.
According to a statement from the Brilho Programme, 1,332,230 people have benefited from solar systems and 920,790 people from improved cooking solutions, contributing to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by over 560,000 tonnes.
The note points out that over 32,000 micro and small entrepreneurs are making productive use of the technology to generate income in various economic acetivities, thus contributing to local economic development.
Since its inception, according to the statement, the BRILHO programme has mobilized 33.7 million pounds sterling (about 42.3 million US dollars) in additional private funding for the renewable energy sector and created 1,971 new jobs.
“The programme has also provided technical support to the Government of Mozambique in drawing up the regulatory framework for off-grid areas, making Mozambique a more attractive market for investors in the renewable energy sector”, reads the document.
The note also announces that, as a way of reaching more Mozambicans with access to clean energy, SNV and the governments of the United Kingdom and Sweden have formalized the extension of the Brilho programme until October 2026, with an additional contribution of 8.7 million pounds, bringing the total funding for the programme to 38 million pounds.
“This additional support demonstrates the recognition of the results achieved, as well as the continued commitment of these partners to promoting sustainability and development in Mozambique. This extension will allow the programme to continue to expand its reach and impact, benefiting even more people across the country”, the document says.
