Maputo, 3 May (AIM) – The Mozambican National Communications Institute (INCM), the regulatory body for telecommunications, has announced new, reduced tariffs for voice, data and SMS services, in order to allow greater access to the use of mobile phones and digital inclusion.
According to the INCM Chairperson, Thua Mote, who made the announcement on Thursday, in Maputo, the new tariffs come into force on Saturday.
The last time that the Telecommunications tariffs were reviewed was in 2021.
The cost of voice calls will drop from the current six meticais (about nine US cents) per minute to five meticais per minute. The average price of the data service falls from 2.30 to 1.08 meticais per megabyte.
Regarding the average price of the national SMS service, it has fallen from 1.70 to 1.1 meticais per text message.
“The INCM mission, as telecommunications regulator, is to guarantee the availability of infrastructures, quality services, a competitive environment and affordable prices for consumers, with the aim of ensuring the stability and sustainability of the market”, Mote said.
The communications regulator, he said, always looks to the public interest and also to innovations and the expansion of telecommunications infrastructures.
“Operators continue to expand their services to those areas where purchasing power is low. We also want to guarantee digital inclusion”, he said.
“The INCM”, he added, “has taken new measures that contribute to digital inclusion, the promotion of local content and the boost of educational content through zero-cost access to education platforms at national level, and a 90 per cent reduction in the cost of access to local content hosted in Mozambique”, Mote said.
It remains to be seen whether, and how, the three mobile phone operators will pass on these reductions to their clients.
