Presidente da República, Filipe Nyusi, inaugura Mercado de Peixe de Chocas Mar, província de Nampula
Chocas-Mar, (Mozambique), 27 Jul (AIM) – Work on a fishing port in the town of Angoche in the northern Mozambican province of Nampula is to begin in July, announced President Filipe Nyusi on Saturday.
Speaking at the resort of Chocas-Mar, in the Nampula district of Mossuril, where he was inaugurating a new fish market, Nyusi said the Angoche fishing port “will represent the highest point of recognizing the importance of the fisheries sector in Angoche district. The road from Nametil to Angoche, now under construction, will make it possible to transport large amounts of high quality fisheries products from that region to the rest of the country and the world”.
The President stressed the importance of fish markets, noting that one already exists in Namige, in Mogincual district, and another is being built in Larde district, to empower the local communities with fisheries facilities.
“The construction of this fish market in Chocas-Mar reflects the government’s commitment to set up infrastructure conditions so that the Mozambican people can develop sustainably, and thus improve the quality of their lives”, said the President.
The government’s intention, he added, is to develop fishing in a commercial form, so that artisanal fishermen can reduce their post-catch losses and improve their sales within the recommended health and hygiene standards.
Establishing this market, he continued, “reflects the commitment to diversify the national economy”.
Nyusi recalled the recent tragedy of the drowning of 98 people when an overcrowded fishing boat capsized on the journey from Lunga, also in Mossuril district, to Mozambique Island. The disaster occurred because of disinformation: the victims were fleeing from their homes in Lunga because of a rumour, later shown to be entirely false, that a cholera epidemic had hit the region.
Nyusi said that the government, in addition to implanting and improving social services, will use community means of information to communicate with local communities about events occurring in society, thus preventing disinformation and the agitation caused by rumours.
