Maputo, 10 Jun (AIM) – The Rwandan troops, who are helping the Mozambican armed forces in the fight against terrorism, claim to have killed at least 70 jihadists in the Mbau administrative post, Mocímboa da Praia district, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
According to Mozambican Television (TVM) these terrorists are part of a group of 150 who attacked Mbau on May 29.
According to a spokesperson for the Rwandan Forces, cited by the channel, it was a mistake for the terrorists to attack positions and villages under the responsibility of the Rwandan contingent.
In images shown by the TV, the terrorists are seen dead on the ground. These are possibly the same images that went viral on the day of the attack, in which initial reports, announced by President Nyusi, indicated that between 11 and 13 terrorists had been killed.
According to local sources, cited in Monday’s issue of the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique” , the terrorists tried to attack the population of Mbau again, which led to the prompt intervention of the Rwandan forces.
The paper’s sources believe that the terrorists wanted to take revenge on the defenceless population, a week after they had suffered a heavy setback.
The residents also claim that, despite the relative calm, the population of Mbau still has no health services provided by the mobile brigades, a situation associated with fear on the part of the health professionals.
