Maputo, 11 July (AIM) – Americo Muchanga, who was recently relieved of his duties as Chairperson of the Mozambique Airports company (ADM), was appointed on Wednesday as the new chairperson of Mozambique Airlines (LAM).
Muchanga replaced the interim Director General, Theunis Crous, who had been appointed from Fly Modern Ark (FMA), the South African company hired, in April 2023, by the government to bring LAM into profitability and rescue it from bankruptcy.
The contract with FMA ended last April but the government recently said that it saw no reason not to continue with its consultancy.
However, despite the deal with the South African company, LAM’s debts to its suppliers and partners have continued to grow. It is no secret that the LAM has debts of over 100 million dollars and almost no fleet of its own.
In February, FMA claimed that around 3.2 million dollars had disappeared from the airline’s coffers last December alone, and the government, through the Institute for the Management of State Holdings (IGEPE), has called for the intervention of the Attorney-General’s Office (PGR) in order to hold those involved in the alleged embezzlement accountable for their crimes.
So far, the authorities have said nothing or presented to the public those involved in the embezzlement scandal.
