Maputo, 24 Jul (AIM) – A group of criminals, believed to be islamist terrorists, on Monday night, kidnapped a fisherman in Kalugo village, Mocímboa da Praia district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado.
According to sources cited in Wednesday’s issue of the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique”, the victim and three other individuals were fishing off Lucheti and Kalugo villages when suddenly the terrorists appeared.
“There were four fishermen in all, but three went out to sea when they realized that a strange boat was approaching. The three swam to the shore where they informed the authorities. They said that their colleague didn’t make it into the water and it seems that the terrorists kidnapped him and the boat also went with them.
According to the paper’s sources, the terrorists came from the south, which likely means that they were from the administrative post of Quiterajo, in Macomia district.
Another source said that, unlike in previous episodes, the terrorists did not start the boat’s engine when they approached the fishermen.
“In the past, they used motorized boats to surprise the fishermen, but this time it wasn’t the case. Maybe that’s why they managed to get close to where those fishermen were”, a source said.
A military source, cited by the paper, said that the Mozambican defence and security forces have no doubt that the terrorists have some active bases in the Mucojo administrative post, specifically along the banks of the Messalo river.
The villages of Lucheti and Kalugo are just a few kilometers from the administrative post of Mbau, where terrorists recently tried unsuccessfully to attack the population and the position of the Rwandan defense forces, responsible for the security cordon in Mocímboa da Praia.
