Maputo, 24 Jul (AIM) – The Mozambican government on Tuesday relieved Marcelino Alberto Gildo of his duties as chairperson of the board of directors of the publicly owned electricity company, EDM.
The Council of Ministers (Cabinet) appointed, as his replacement, Joaquim Henriques Ou-Chim, who had, since 2020, been an executive administrator of EDM. Between 2012 and 2017, Ou-Chim had been EDM’s Director of Electrification and Projects.
A note from the Council of Ministers said that “In addition to other key roles at EDM, Gildo was involved in designing the Mphanda Nkuwa hydro-electric project, on the Zambezi river, in the central Mozambican province of Tete, as well as the Tete-Maputo transmission line”.
The Mphanda Nkuwa project involves building a dam about 60 kilometers downstream from the existing dam at Cahora Bassa, and a power station that will generate 1,500 megawatts of electricity. The 1,300 kilometre Tete-Maputo high voltage transmission line will allow power from the Zambezi Valley to reach Maputo without passing through South Africa
The Council of Ministers also appointed Augusta Maita as executive director of the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA)-Mozambique, the entity responsible for implementing investment projects mainly in the central province of Zambezia.
In order to implement the projects, last April, the American government, through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and its partners, decided to disburse around 144 million dollars over the next six years to improve coastal resilience and generate economic opportunities in Zambezia.
The total budget, valued at 500 million dollars, was approved in June 2023, in Washington, by the MCC board of directors. The Mozambican government, for its part, committed to disbursing 37.7 million dollars.
Augusta Maíta was formerly Minister of the Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries, and director-general of the country’s relief agency, the National Disaster Management Institute (INGD).
