Maputo, 2 Aug (AIM) – Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Wednesday inaugurated the connection to the national electricity grid of Galinha administrative post, in Muanza district, in the central province of Sofala.
According to a press release from the publicly owned electricity company EDM, Nyusi told the ceremony that the arrival of electrical power to Galinha is one more step by the government in the gradual implementation of the “Energy for All” programme, which is intended to improve the quality of life of all Mozambicans.
He said that the programme to electrify all the country’s administrative posts, which began in 2018, is having satisfactory and encouraging results.
“From 2018 to the present”, he added, “more than ten million Mozambicans have electricity in their homes, despite adverse events caused by storms, terrorism and some sabotage”.
He hoped to see massive productive use of electricity, and warned communities to be on the lookout for any vandalizing of electrical infrastructures.
“Let us all be vigilant against theft, vandalization and any other type of sabotage of electrical facilities”, urged Nyusi. “Let us look after these gains, and draw the greatest benefit from them, using electricity not only for lighting, but also to develop income-generating projects, and to promote investments in agriculture and agro-processing”.
The electrification of Galinha included the building of 32 kilometres of medium voltage transmission line, and eight kilometres of low voltage line. Four transformer posts were installed and 120 lampposts for public lighting. In the first phase, 500 new consumers can be connected.
The electrification of Galinha was entirely financed by the Mozambican government, at a cost of 76.1 million meticais (about 1.2 million US dollars, at the current exchange rate).
There are 33 administrative posts in Sofala province, and 32 of them are now electrified.
