Harare, 19 Aug (AIM) – Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi has expressed his gratitude to the support given to Mozambique by the Southern African Development Community Military Mission (SAMIM) in the fight against Islamist terrorism in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
The President expressed his gratitude, on Saturday, on the sidelines of the 44th SADC Ordinary Summit, which took place in the Zimbabwean capital, Harare.
“We expressed our deep gratitude to our sister SADC countries for sending the SADC Mission to Mozambique as a regional response in the fight against terrorism in some districts of Cabo Delgado”, he told reporters.
SAMIM was set up, in Maputo, on 15 July 2021, following its approval by an Extraordinary Summit of SADC Heads of State and Governments, with the aim of supporting the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces (FDS) in the fight against terrorism.
The Mission’s mandate expired last July. However, the Mozambican forces can now count on the support of some friendly countries, on a bilateral basis. So far, the country counts on the support of forces from Rwanda and Tanzania.
The President also expressed his gratitude to his SADC counterparts for supporting Mozambique in its successful bid for membership of the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member.
Nyusi believed the SADC summit had been successful. He claimed it had been a better event “since we’re evolving more and more consensual decisions. We are all to be congratulated.”
