Maputo, 3 Sep (AIM) – Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi has invited Chinese businesses to invest in the country’s port infrastructures, as well as in the industrial sector, in order to boost cooperation between the two countries.
Nyusi made the invitation, on Tuesday, in the Chinese city of Jinan, at the opening of the China-Mozambique Business Forum.
According to Nyusi, Mozambique is open to receiving Chinese businesses “to invest in various sectors. I assure you that Mozambique is open. The country has conditions for various investments.”
He listed the opportunities in the hydrocarbon sector, saying that the country has vast reserves of natural gas estimated at more than 200 trillion cubic feet, huge deposits of graphite, rubies and heavy mineral sands.
The President told the businesses that the country “has macroeconomic stability, which translates into a reduction in inflation, which in the first quarter stood at three per cent, which also implied a reduction in market interest rates and exchange rate stability, a fact that, in 2023, led to foreign investment intentions in the order of 2.2 billion dollars”, he said.
He also pointed to the impact of the reforms on the business environment, with a greater focus on easing bureaucracy in company licensing, as well as the revision of investment and labour laws and the introduction of flexible measures aimed at accelerating economic growth.
Nyusi stressed that the reforms implemented, over the last three years, facilitate the flow of foreign capital and encourage foreign investment.
Nyusi also referred to the projects to build new railways and ports, pointing to the recent ground-breaking ceremony for the projected new deep-water port located in Matutuine district, in the southern province of Maputo, and a railway system that will directly serve three countries, namely Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia.
During his working-visit to China, Nyusi will also attend the 9th summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), which will take place in Beijing, under the slogan: “Hand in Hand Promoting Modernization and Building a High-Level China-Africa Community with a Shared Future.”
