Maputo, 16 Sep (AIM) – A 49 year-old individual was murdered after being kidnapped, last Tuesday, in the Katembe district, of Maputo city.
According to the victim’s family, cited by the independent paper “O País”, after the man was murdered, there were negotiations in order to rescue him. The kidnappers demanded 50,000 meticais (780 dollars at the current exchange rate) as ransom, but “something went wrong so that he wasn’t spared.”
His body was found a day later near the country’s North-South main road (N1), about a kilometer from the Katembe roundabout, with signs of assault.
“He left for work on Tuesday and never returned home. Not alive”, sources said.
The kidnappings that have been plaguing the country’s cities usually involve business people of Asian origin. This case, however, seems to be of a very different nature.
According to local sources, in addition to kidnappings, Katembe neighbourhood is struggling with a wave of robberies and rapes at night as a result of lack of public electricity and of police patrols.
